Michelle Obama Dedicates White House Kitchen Garden
First Lady Michelle Obama dedicated the White House Kitchen Garden on Wednesday, October 5, 2016.
The expanded White House Kitchen Garden updates were a combined project of the National Park Service and the University of Virginia School of Architecture, whose students designed the new layout, arbor, table and benches. The garden has grown from the original 1,100 square feet to the 2,800 square feet. It has a new wooden arbor for an entrance, wider stone walkways, wooden tables and benches. The furniture is made from reclaimed wood from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello in Virginia, James and Dolly Madison's Montpelier in Virginia and Martin Luther King Jr.'s home in Atlanta.
The Burpee Foundation and W. Atlee Burpee Company contributed the $2.5 million to the National Park Foundation to ensure the garden is maintained.
The White House Kitchen Garden is Michelle Obama's legacy to fight childhood obesity and promote healthier living , along with her initiative, "Let's Move".
